ENOCH ALLDREDGE

BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY

(1807-1879)

Blount County, Alabama

Enoch Alldredge was a farmer and Confederate officer. He was born May 16, 1807, in Giles County, Tennessee and died November 22, 1879, in Brooksville, Blount County. He was the son of Alabama pioneers, Andrew (1782-1848) and Leah (Chaney) Alldredge, (1784-1854) the former a native of North Carolina, who lived in Brooksville at the time of his death in 1850. Leah Chaney was the daughter of Jeremiah Chaney, a soldier of the American Revolution and Mary Kirby. Andrew Alldredge is said to have planted the first apple tree in Blount County, Alabama.

Enoch was the grandson of Nathan Alldredge, a Revolutionary soldier, and Jerry and May (Curby) Chaney. He came with his parents to Blount County in December 1816 and was educated in the common schools of that county. He was elected justice of the peace about 1828; served in the Creek Indian War in Florida as a private in Capt. Musgrove’s company, in 1836; was elected to the State legislature in 1836; and served in that body through twenty-six sessions.

In 1862 he raised a company for the C. S. Army, and at the organization of the Forty-eighth Alabama infantry and was elected its major. He commanded the regiment at Cedar Run and was seriously wounded, being disabled for further service. He returned to his farm near Brooksville and resided there until his death.

Enoch had seven sons and two sons-in-law in the C. S. Army, and one of his sons was killed at Second Manassas, another died in prison at Fort Donelson, and a third was permanently crippled. He was a Democrat, a deacon for fifty-eight years and clerk in the Primitive Baptist church.

He married: November 18, 1826, Amelia Pace, (1811- 1864) daughter of John and Ziffory Pace, who came from Virginia to Alabama and settled in Blount County.

  12. Demons G. Aldredge
  13. David Leonard Alldredge.

Colonel Enoch Alldredge has ever been a faithful public servant. He is a close observer of men and possesses much sagacity. Enoch Alldredge was a grandson of Nathan Alldredge and Jerry Chaney. Both were Revolutionary war soldiers from VA. Colonel Alldredge served 35 years in Alabama Legislative in both houses. He is buried in the Alldredge Cemetery at Brooksville, Alabama.”
