BIOGRAPHY: Thomas Lee Bailey born 1773 – descendant of King’s Mountain soldier




Shelby County, AL

Thomas L. Bailey was born in Virginia in 1773, the son of Thomas Lee Bailey and Sarah Osborn. His father died Oct. 1, 1780, at Kings Mountain, NC.

Thomas moved to Hawkins, Tennessee by 1798 where he married Zilpha Lee (born around 1773) in Johnston, North Carolina.

Some Descendants of THOMAS LEE BAILEY (1745-1780)

The family moved to Alabama before 1802 and were found in the Cahaba Valley area of Jefferson County, Alabama according to the 1820 Jefferson County, census.

For some unknown reason, Thomas was nicknamed. “Devil Tom” Bailey. Thomas and Zilpha had the following known children:

  1. James Bailey born 1798 Tennessee- died Aug. 29, 1885, in Brazoria, Texas. He married Winifred Lee, (b. Dec. 20, 1800) in Tennessee. daughter of Needham and Susan (Bailey) Lee in Alabama.
  2. Mary Bailey born 1799 Hawkins co., Tennessee – died 1825 in Shelby Co., Alabama
  3. Elizabeth Bailey was born about 1850 in Tennesee
  4. Lee Bailey was born about 1808 in Tennessee.
  5. Susan Bailey born Feb. 11, 1811, Tennessee – died Jan 4, 1880, in Helena, Shelby County, Alabama. She married Joseph Street in 1823.
  6. Sarah Bailey was born March 19, 1813, Knox, Kentucky and died Dec. 8, 1906, in Shelby County, Alabama.
  7. Elmira Bailey was born Aug. 16, 1816, Shelby County, Alabama and died September 4, 1895, in Jefferson County, Alabama. It has been reported that she was the first white child born in Shelby County, Alabama. She married Rev. Emberson Acton.
  8. Winifred Bailey was born in March 1821 in Shelby County, Alabama and died July 6, 1891, in McCalla, Jefferson County, Alabama. She married Nathan Olious Jones 1840 in Shelby County, Alabama.
  9. William C. A. Bailey was born 1823 in Shelby County, Alabama and died 1860 in Alabama.
  10. Irvin Bailey was born Nov. 23, 1823, in Shelby County, Alabama and died Jan. 15, 1899 in Shelby County, Alabama.
  11. Zilpha Bailey was born 1827 in Shelby County, Alabama and died Jan. 18, 1909. She married George Thomas Ozley around 1847.
  12. Sevier Bailey was born 1828 in Shelby County, Alabama.

Thomas L. Bailey died May 2, 1853, in Shelby County, Alabama and is buried in Columbiana Cemetery, Columbiana, Shelby County, Alabama.
