One Sexton, an Englishman, had two wives, and this significant inscription was put upon the tombstone of one by the bereaved husband:
Here lies my wife, Sallie Sexton;
She was a wife who never vexed one;
I can’t say that for her at the next stone.
The following is from a tombstone in New Jersey:
Reader, pass on! – don’t waste your time
On bad biography and bitter rhyme;
For what I am, this crumbling clay insures,
And what I was, is no affair of yours!
