NEWTON EDDINGS
BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY
(1837-1927)
Shelby County, Alabama
Newton Eddings was marshal of the town of Montevallo, Alabama. He was on his native heath, having been born in Shelby County, Feb. 20, 1837. Ezekiel Eddings, (Feb. 11, 1806- Oct 18, 1875) his father, was a native of Lincoln County, Tennessee and was one of the pioneers in Shelby County, Alabama, where he lived out his days as a farmer, dying Oct. 18, 1886. He was the son of James Eddings, a Democrat and a member of the Masonic fraternity, and he and his wife were Methodists.
Ezekiel Eddings married Polly Johnson, (April 22, 1816- Jan. 13, 1891), daughter of Moses Johnson, a Tennessean, who for twenty years was tax collector of the county, and who was a veteran of the War of 1812 and granddaughter of Moses Johnson, Revolutionary War Soldier.
There were four of the six children born to Ezekiel Eddinigs and Polly Eddings living in 1904, Newton being the youngest. He secured a fair education in the district schools of his day and passed the entire period of life in agricultural pursuits. He removed to Montevallo from his farm six miles out, but he still cultivated his farm. He was appointed marshal of the town, a position which he held with satisfaction to the citizens.
Newton gave his support to the men and measures of the Democratic party. He was a Mason and a supporter of the Methodist Episcopal church. He married Mary Jane Harper (1838-1912) in 1858. She was the daughter of Thomas Harper and Nancy (McBride) Harper. Their known children were:

- Johnnie Eddings ( Jan 7, 1858 – Oct 18, 1858)
Mr. and Mrs. Eddings and family were esteemed most highly in Montevallo, where they were active and worthy members of society. Newton passed away on Jan. 27, 1927 and his wife passed away on Jan. 26, 1912. They are both buried Moores Crossroad Cemetery with many of their children.
