    He made quite an impression on the people evidently. It seems the name, La Fayette, shows up in many areas. One of my grandparents had a brother named La Fayette (first name), though I only learned that in recent years. The country people around them had shortened it to Fayette, then Fate. Fate is what I’d always heard and thought it was certainly an odd name.
