BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY

(1812-1860)

Marion, Lamar County, Alabama

James Greer Bankhead was born April 27, 1812, in Giles County, Tennessee, the son of George Bankhead and Jane Greer.

George and Jane (Greer) Bankhead were natives of Union District, S. C., who moved first to Union District, S. C., then to west Alabama where they located near the present site of Russellville. They moved two years later to Marion County, where they settled at what was later became Crew’s depot on the military road. George acquired land and built a home and the first mill in the county located on the Palm Spring branch. He died and is buried in the Jarrett graveyard. His wife survived him a few years. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William H. Duke, in Pontotoc, Mississippi.

James Greer Bankhead established a plantation home at the site of old Moscow, Alabama. He married Susan Fleming Hollis, who was the daughter of John Hollis, a captain in the Revolutionary War. The town of Sulligent was built upon part of their original plantation. ⁱ The Bankhead family is originally from Scotland.

James Greer Bankhead died December 31, 1860, in Sulligent, Alabama and is buried in Sulligent, Lamar County, Alabama.
