BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY

(1817-1873)

Perry County, Alabama

Johnston McCauley was born on January 20, 1817 in Orange County, North Carolina, the sixth child of Charles McCauley and Mary Wilson. He was the grandson of William McCauley and Catherine Johnston. His grandfather immigrated from Antrim County, Ireland before the Revolutionary War

Johnston’s grandfather, William was a prominent citizen of North Carolina where he served as Sheriff, Justice of the Peace, Representative and Senator to the North Carolina Assembly. William McCauley, along with his brother Matthew were donors of land to start the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mathew served as a Lieutenant with Washington at Valley Forge.

Johnston left North Carolina and arrived in Alabama prior to 1840 when he married Mary Missouri Miller on July 13, 1840 in Perry County, Alabama. Mary Missouri was born July 8, 1819 in South Carolina the daughter of George and Perminlia (Blassingame) Miller, also early pioneers to Perry County, Alabama. George and his wife died in middle age, and left five orphans. They are buried in Marion Cemetery in Perry County, Alabama.

Johnston and Mary had a daughter, Mary in Alabama then returned for a short time to North Carolina for a short time, where his second child Felix was born around 1845. On their return to Alabama, their third child, Margaret was born in Georgia. They were again living in Perry County for the birth of their fourth child, Sarah in 1849 and subsequent children.

Johnston served in the Confederacy. He enlisted in Selma, Alabama July 25, 1864 and appeared on muster rolls until May 1865. Johnston died Jan. 20, 1873 and Mary Missouri died June 27, 1880 in Perry County, Alabama.
