BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY

Bibb County, Alabama

Martha Hill, wife of Frederick Monroe James was also from a Bibb County pioneer family. She was born July 26, 1802 in Easter, Pitt County, North Carolina, the daughter of Alexander and Sarah (Lnu) Hill. Alexander Hill arrived very early in Cahawba, Alabama wile it was still part of the Mississippi territory.

He and his parents and seven brothers, James Jones, Jesse, John, George, Robert and Pharough Hill came from eastern Tennessee shortly after the War of 1812 and settled near the present town of Johnstown and along the present Tuscaloosa – Bibb County line. The area is referred to in early Cahawba County Court records as the “Hill’s settlement. Other families who traveled and settled in this area include Calverts, Kessee, Goodson and others. Alexander James, Pleasant and Robert served in the Alabama Senate and House of Representatives during the early days of state.

Alexander Hill had the following known children:

1. Martha Hill who married Frederick Monroe James
2. Alexander Hill – nothing more is known of him.
3. John Hill – nothing more is known of him
4. James Hill – died before 1846
5. Claiborn Hill – He married Elizabeth Starling Jun 24, 1833 in Talladega, Al and moved to Calhoun, Texas where he raised a large family.
