BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY

(1833- 1912)

BARBOUR, MACON, BULLOCK CO., ALABAMA

 

Andrew W. Beverly was born in Upton county, Georgia on Jan 13, 1833, and went with his parents to Barbour county, Alabama, in 1837. He moved on to Macon county (now Bullock county) in 1842. He received his education in Bullock county and lived on a. farm until the war began.

In 1862 he enlisted in Company E, Forty-fifth Alabama, under Capt. W. J. Lee as a private. He was engaged m the battles of Perryv1lle, Kentucky, and Murfreesboro, Tennessee, but on account of exposure he lost his health, and in 1863 was compelled to retire from active service and to be put on detail duty until the close of the war, when he returned to his home and engaged in farming.

In June 1882, he began business as a merchant at Three Notch, Ala. In 1887 he sold out and moved to Union Springs, where he continued for some time to conduct his business. In 1900 he was elected treasurer of Bullock county for a term of four years and made a good and efficient officer.

Andrew W. Beverly died Nov. 6, 191,2 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Union Springs, Bullock County, Alabama.

He married Mary Frances (b. 1835- 1915). She is also buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Bullock County, Alabama.

  1. I grew up in Union Springs, Alabama – county seat of Bullock County. I remember Mr. Beverly’s grocery store in Union Springs. This would have been in the 1940’s and 1950’s. I believe it was D. B. Beverly but am not sure. Sylvia Sumner Lee Thorp
