BIOGRAPHY: Archimedes M. Mahan, Perry County, Alabama

ARCHIMEDES M. MAHAN

BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY

Tennessee and Cahawba & Perry County, Alabama

Three Mahan brothers, of Irish descent, served in the Revolutionary War. John Mahan, served as an officer and married Mary Scott, the daughter of Henry Scott and a close relative of General Winfield Scott. He and his family moved to East Tennessee in Sevier County after the Revolutionary War and his four sons, Edward, James, John and Archimedes served in the War of 1812.

In 1816, John, his wife Mary and his family moved to old Cahawba County, Alabama and built a log cabin near old Smith Cemetery in Bibb County, Alabama. He and his wife are buried in the cemetery along with several of his children (Mary’s tombstone is engraved, “a close relative of General Winfield Scott: John’s inscription on tombstone reads: Maj. John Mahan, Esq. Died Apr. 27, 1820 age 70 years Soldier in the Revolution Mary Scott wife of Maj. John Mahan In Memory of Col. James Mahan Died May 29, 1849 Son of John and Mary Mahan). Later, his son, John moved to Talladega County while Archimedes moved to Perry County, Alabama. Their mother, Mary Scott Mahan, moved with Archimedes to Perry County after their father’s death.

Archimedes M. Mahan enlisted in the Tennessee Mounted Volunteers on September 23, 1813 and served as a Private in Captain Perry’s Company. He was discharged three months later on December 23, 1813 at Sevierville, Sevier County, Tennessee. He served again from November 13, 1814 until May 13, 1815 as ensign in Captain Porter’s Company of the Tennessee militia, being discharged at Mobile in Mississippi Territory.
