BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY

September 7, 1869 – October 17, 1942

Bibb County, Alabama

Walter Harrison Cottingham was born September 7, 1869 in Bibb County, Alabama. His father, Oliver Jackson Cottingham, was 21 and his mother, Louisa Georgia “Lou” Langston, was 19. Walter’s father died when he was 16. Since he was the oldest of nine children, Walter quit school and found employment to help raise his siblings.

He married Catherine Earl “Kate” Snead on 22 February 1893, in Bibb, Alabama. Walter built a two story brick building across the street from the Bibb County Courthouse in Centreville which is still in use. The young family lived on the top floor while he conducted several businesses on the bottom half, but due to his generous and trusting nature, each business failed. Finally, he became a Miller with a bakery in the bottom half.

Walter Harrison and Kate with a grandchild, W. O. Cottingham, son of Walter Watson and Ellarea Cottingham. W. O. Cottingham became a Baptist minister.

The family was living in Election Precinct 6 Six Mile,

Bibb, Alabama, United States in 1930 and Election Precinct 5 Centreville, Bibb, Alabama, United States in 1940.
