BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY

(1861-aft. 1921)

Limestone, Madison and Jefferson County, Alabama

William Vaughan, attorney-at-law, Birmingham, Alabama was born in Limestone county, Alabama, Dec. 15, 1861, the son of William. P. Vaughan and Amanda (Davis) Vaughan of Kentucky. The paternal grandfather, James Vaughan, was in the War of 1812. He was a farmer. The maternal ancestry were also fighters, and one of them was killed at the battle of Bunker Hill.

The father, William P. Vaughan, was a farmer and a merchant. He removed to Alabama in his youth, and lived in Limestone county most of his life, but died in Madison county, Alabama. They had two sons and two daughters, all living in 1921.

William was reared on a farm, receiving his early education in the public and private schools in Huntsville, Ala. He studied law in the office of Walker & Shelby, of Huntsville; was admitted to the bar when nineteen years of age, and began practice with Richard H. Lowe at Huntsville. In 1887 Mr. Vaughan came to Birmingham and began the practice of his profession. The firm was Vaughan & Davidson.

William and Bessie Anderson, of Huntsville, were married July 23, 1886, and had two sons by 1921, 1.William Vaughan and 2.Dudley Vaughan

Mr. Vaughan took an active interest in politics. He was appointed by President McKinley in 1897 as United States district attorney for the northern district of Alabama. He was reappointed by Mr. McKinley in 1901, and by President Roosevelt in the same year. He was removed from office in 1902 by Roosevelt. He was chairman of the Republican State committee for six years, not offering himself for reelection. He was grand chancellor of the Knights of Pythias of Alabama for one term. He was also an Odd Fellow.
