BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY
Perry County, Alabama
John Ford was born about 1777 in Georgia or Carolina and migrated with his brother Capt. William Thomas Ford, born about 1773, from Oglethorpe County, Georgia to Perry county, Alabama in 1818. They were the sons of Benjamin Ford.
John and his wife Elizabeth Farrar, who he married 1804 in Oglethorpe, Georgia settled in the area of Perryville which now lies within the Talladega National Forest.
William Thomas Ford, John’s brother married Martha Kesiah Taylor about 1796 in Oglethorpe, Georgia. Georgia Archives indicate that he as a Captain in the Volunteer Company of Militia, 2nd Regiment of Gen. John Stewart’s Brigade. He fought in the Battle of Calabe in Macon County, Alabama. He first settled in Perry County where the town of Sprott is located today near Burrough’s Ferry. His acreage covered the entire town of Sprott and owned a large number of slaves. He built a grist mill operated by water power on Ford’s Mill Creek that operated until 1907. He also built a sawmill and a house which ranked as the finest house of its day. William was elected as a representative for his county in the state legislature of 1822 and was one of five commissioners elected to select a county seat for Perry County in 1822. He assisted in laying out, surveying and furnishing lumber for the selected town of Marion.
William was active in his Baptist Church and served as a delegate to the first Alabama Baptist Convention in 1823. In 1840, he was stricken and died suddenly in a cotton field while overseeing his slaves and is buried in the family cemetery.
